RESEARCH
1989 - Present Computer Reconstruction of CT Serial Cross-sections of Extracted Human Teeth
400 cross-sectional images of each tooth are stacked and integrated into transparent
3-D computer models allowing simultaneous viewing of internal and external root anatomy. This is a long-term study that will include several thousand teeth to create a 3-D anatomic database. In one application, this database will enable students to “fly” through hundreds of root canals before treating a single patient. It will also provide researchers with accurate computer models of teeth for comparative anatomic analysis, stress analysis of restorative systems, and hydrodynamic analysis of root canal irrigants.
